Reaching the summit of Mount Kinabalu is an achievement many hikers dream of. For Navendran, however, the journey carried a deeper meaning. On 23 February 2026, he successfully climbed the iconic mountain while wearing Indian traditional attire, earning recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records as the first person to accomplish this unique feat.
The record was officially recognised on 6 March 2026, marking a proud and memorable milestone in Navendran’s hiking journey.
Navendran’s passion for hiking began later in life. He only started exploring mountains and nature trails at the age of 40, dedicating his weekends to outdoor adventures. What initially began as a hobby soon evolved into a passion that pushed him to take on greater challenges.
Last November, he joined the Hiking Polama Group and completed the demanding Annapurna Base Camp trek in Nepal, an experience that strengthened both his confidence and determination.

However, the idea to climb Mount Kinabalu in Indian traditional attire was inspired by someone very close to his heart, his mother.
“After I returned from the Annapurna Base Camp trek, my mother asked my sister whether I had achieved any special recognition from it. That simple question stayed with me and inspired me to pursue something meaningful,” Navendran shared.
Motivated by that moment, he decided to attempt something unique and symbolic. He applied to the Malaysia Book of Records to document his goal of climbing Mount Kinabalu in Indian traditional attire. After about two months, his application was approved with guidance and assistance from Ms. Siti Hajah of the Malaysia Book of Records.
“This achievement is very special to me because it is done in honour of my mother,” he said. “Her words inspired me to challenge myself and do something that carries both personal and cultural meaning.”
Navendran also credits his children as a constant source of motivation. Their curiosity about his adventures has continued to encourage him to aim higher.

“Whenever my children see a mountain, they will ask their mother, ‘Has Appa already climbed this mountain?’ That question alone pushes me to keep going and to achieve more,” he said.
Beyond personal accomplishment, Navendran hopes his journey will inspire others to embrace a more active and adventurous lifestyle.
“I hope this achievement will encourage Malaysians, especially young people, to stay active, explore nature, and appreciate the beauty of the outdoors. Hiking not only strengthens the body but also builds resilience and discipline.”
Reflecting on his journey, Navendran expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people who stood by him throughout the experience.
“I am deeply thankful to my family for their constant encouragement and support, my wife, children, in-laws, and my wife’s cousins and relatives. Without their belief in me, this achievement would not have been possible.”
