In a recent chat with Telangana Today, actress Shruti Haasan opened up about her experience working on Coolie, a film that blends action with emotion in a way that surprised even her. From a powerful role to sharing the screen with legends, Shruti says this project was truly special.
How “Coolie” got its name?
When filming began, there was no title. But once the story came together, Shruti felt “Coolie” was the perfect fit.
“During dubbing, Lokesh showed me some parts of the film and suddenly, the name just made sense. It fits so well with the story’s feel and energy,” she shared.
Shruti plays a role that adds emotional weight to a high-energy action film.
“It’s a very male-driven story with lots of action. But my character brings that soft, emotional side to the film. Usually in such stories, women get pushed aside, but here, every character has importance. That’s something Lokesh always does well,” she said.
Shruti praised the director for his clear vision and smooth working style.
“He knows exactly what he wants, and everything is planned. There are no last-minute changes or long discussions. It’s like everyone in the team is playing their part in a great song.”
Coolie features a stellar cast including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Satyaraj, Upendra, and Soubin Shahir. Shruti says it felt surreal.
“Just listening to Rajni sir talk about his early days gave me goosebumps. As an artist not just Kamal Haasan’s daughter, it was a dream to be there. Each of them brought something unique.”
Shruti revealed that her prep for this role wasn’t about physical training, but emotional understanding.
“People keep asking if I have action scenes, but no. This time it was all about conversations with Lokesh to really understand the character. My role is part of the emotional backbone of the story.”
Though Shruti is also a musician, she made sure to focus completely on Coolie while filming.
“Lokesh told me this would be intense, with many big stars involved. So I cleared everything else and gave it my full attention.”
Shruti gives one last reason to look forward to the film:
“Yes, there’s action. Yes, there are fights. But there’s also a heart at the centre of it all and that’s what really drew me in.”
Curious to see a new side of Shruti Haasan? Coolie might just be her most emotionally grounded performance yet proving that even in a world full of action, it’s the quiet strength.
