Following the COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent lockdown in India, many film releases, including Thalapathy Vijay's 'Master' in 2020 have been postponed indefinitely.

This has given rise to a practice of releasing new films on OTT platforms like Amazon Prime. Jyothika's 'Ponmagal Vandhal' and Keerthy Suresh's 'Penguin' were some of the recent films to join the OTT bandwagon.

'Master' is one of the highly-anticipated films of the year. It will be the first time Vijay joining forces with Vijay Sethupathi on-screen. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film has stirred up quite the buzz when its first look posters and songs released. Initially, 'Master' was supposed to hit the big screen on April 9, 2020.

Many theatre owners are hoping that Master's release will draw the crowd back to theatres after the lockdown is lifted. Recently, a new screenshot showing 'Master' releasing on Amazon Prime in August has shocked everyone. However, it turns out to be a 2016 Korean action crime film.

In a recent interview, the film's producer Xavier Britto has confirmed that Master will only release in theatres, and not on any streaming platform. With a big budget spent making the film, it's not practical to choose the OTT path.

In an interview with Vikatan, Xavier said: “Vijay is very clear about it. He wants Master to release only when the theaters reopen. It could be this Diwali or next Pongal.”
