Ashok Selvan recently opened up about some of the most personal and vulnerable chapters of his life and career during his appearance on The Gobinath Podcast. From learning to understand himself better after his ADHD diagnosis to facing the emotional weight of career failures, the actor spoke with honesty about the experiences that shaped him both as an artist and as a person.
Opening up about his ADHD diagnosis, Ashok revealed that it was his wife, Keerthi Pandian, who encouraged him to get evaluated. The diagnosis, he said, helped him understand himself in a different way and make sense of certain things he had experienced in his life.
He also spoke candidly about the highs and lows of his acting journey. After the success of Thegidi, Ashok admitted that he struggled to handle the sudden attention and expectations that came with it. What followed was an extremely difficult phase, with the actor revealing that there was a period when he had no work after a string of films failed.
His career eventually found a new direction with Oh My Kadavule, which became an important turning point for him.
But some of his most emotional reflections were about the films that did not receive the love he felt they deserved. Ashok spoke about how much it hurt to see Nitham Oru Vaanam underperform in theatres, even though the film later found a dedicated audience on OTT. He also mentioned films such as Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal and Kootathil Oruthan, which he believes deserved greater recognition. For Ashok, the journey has also taught him that talent alone does not guarantee success.
He acknowledged that being a good actor is important, but commercial success also plays a major role in an artist’s growth. Rather than being discouraged by the setbacks, he now wants to take bigger risks, aim higher and push himself towards opportunities that can take his career to another level.
Away from cinema, Ashok also spoke about marriage and what it means to truly support a partner. Speaking about his relationship with Keerthi Pandian, he shared a progressive perspective on marriage, stressing that a partner should not become a limitation to someone’s dreams. Instead, marriage should create space for both people to grow, pursue their ambitions and become better versions of themselves.
His words reflected a simple idea: love should not ask someone to shrink their dreams. It should give them the confidence and freedom to chase them.
From struggling with success to experiencing failure, finding his footing again and learning more about himself, Ashok Selvan’s journey is a reminder that an actor’s life is not defined only by the films that succeed.
Sometimes, it is the difficult chapters that shape the person behind the performer.
