Dhanush Breaks Silence on Raayan National Award Backlash: “Encourage Us, Don’t Tear Us Down”

Dhanush Breaks Silence on Raayan National Award Backlash: “Encourage Us, Don’t Tear Us Down”

Dhanush has finally addressed the criticism surrounding Raayan's National Award win, responding with honesty and humility while reflecting on the many times his own performances were overlooked despite widespread praise.

Speaking at a public event on Sunday, the actor admitted that 2024 had produced several outstanding Tamil films and acknowledged that some audiences felt other titles deserved the honour.

"I agree that films like Meiyazhagan and Maharaja were among the better films than Raayan last year," he said.

Rather than defending the decision outright, Dhanush used the moment to look back on his own journey in cinema. He recalled several performances that fans believed were worthy of National Award recognition but ultimately went unrewarded.

Among the films he mentioned were Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam, Pudhupettai, 3, Mayakkam Enna, Maryan, Raanjhanaa, Vada Chennai and Karnan.

"You all told me I'd win again, but I didn't," he said.

The actor then pointed out what he saw as a contrast in public reaction.

"Today, nearly 90% of people are opposing my National Award. But when several of my films missed out on National Awards they truly deserved, not even 10% of people spoke about it."

The debate began after Raayan was announced as the winner of the Best Tamil Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards. While many celebrated the achievement, others questioned the decision, arguing that critically acclaimed films such as Maharaja and Meiyazhagan were stronger contenders.

Fans of Vikram also expressed disappointment that Thangalaan, a film widely praised for the actor's intense physical and emotional transformation, did not receive recognition.

As discussions spread across social media, many questioned whether Raayan was the most deserving winner in a year filled with critically acclaimed Tamil releases.

Dhanush also reflected on some of the performances that many believed should have earned him National Award recognition over the years.

Karnan, directed by Vetrimaaran and released in 2021, received widespread acclaim for its powerful story centred on caste oppression and social injustice. Although the film won the National Award for Best Tamil Film at the 69th National Film Awards, Dhanush did not receive the Best Actor honour.

His performances in Maryan and his Hindi debut Raanjhanaa also generated strong expectations among audiences and critics, but neither earned him the coveted acting award.

Despite the criticism surrounding Raayan, Dhanush said he accepted the recognition with gratitude and believed some achievements arrive when they are meant to.

"Some things do not happen even if you try. They happen naturally, and that is how this award has come to me," he said.

He also defended the effort and sincerity that went into making the film, stressing that the entire team had given their best.

"As a Tamilian, I have received these National Awards. Instead of tearing us down, encourage us."

His remarks have since sparked fresh conversations online, with many praising his measured response while others continue to debate the outcome of this year's National Film Awards.
