Director Bala, who has been married to his wife Muthumalar for 18 years, is the latest Kollywood star to legally separate from his partner. The film fraternity is shocked to discover that this couple got divorced at the Chennai Family court this year.

Bala married Muthumalar in 2004, and the couple has a daughter. According to some reports, the couple had been living apart for the last four years due to some misunderstandings.

Bala began his career as an assistant director to legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra before making his directorial debut in 1999 with the Vikram-starring Sethu'. He rose to fame by directing films with unique plots such as 'Nanda', 'Pithamagan', 'Naan Kadavul', 'Avan Ivan', and 'Paradesi'.

His films have received a total of six national awards, 13 state awards, 15 Filmfare awards, and 14 international awards. Some of the most well-known actors like Vikram, Suriya, Vishal, and Arya had their big break in his films.
