Award winning Malaysian reggae artiste and song producer Sasi The Don has released his latest single, called Daddy Don, in conjunction with Father's Day.

Released on Friday, June 19, Daddy Don is a tribute to everyone, including stepfathers, single mothers, and even uncles, who play the role of fathers, said the singer, whose real name is Sasidharan Chandran, in a statement.

"It's a whole storytelling experience that could be shared with a lot of people around the world. This song means hard work; it is a lot about me being a dad because it's a journey. This is my part of talking about daddies because I think they are unsung heroes.

"It took some time because I was not sure I was going in the right direction. I changed the lyrics five times. The chorus is something that's easy for kids to catch. I may have come up with it unconsciously, but it is heavily influenced by my daughter," Sasi said, referring to Shanaiya Lakshmi, 7, whom he cites as an inspiration for the tribute number.

Marrying Asian and Jamaican elements, Daddy Don, produced by Sasi himself and D'Navigator, has Nigerian singer Ibkinx and local crooner Gayatri Vadivel on the vocals.

Clearing misconception

Sasi also sought to address the negative connotations around the word "don', which is often used to refer to the leader of a criminal gang.

To him, the word depicts a leader; a man who is on the top of his world.

"He's on top of everything he does, and he's got it under control. He's not easily shaken or broken, and while a daddy can be weak, he could always become a 'don' through his fatherhood journey.

"Daddy Don doesn't wait for people to knock on his door. He goes out and makes things happen as the catalyst of the family," said Sasi.

"I'm prouder being a dad, than I'm being Sasi The Don. It is what grounds me."

Daddy Don is released and distributed by Sony Music Malaysia.

Besides local media, Daddy Don's release has also been covered in foreign media.
