'Ponniyin Selvan' is a famous novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthi, which depicts the story of Arulmozhivarman before he became the Great King Raja Raja Cholan.

Even though this novel was adapted into stage plays and book series for decades, but many director's attempts to turn this novel into a movie have been shattered so far.

Among the directors who've tried their luck to direct the movie over the years include MGR, Bharathiraja, Kamal Haasan, Shankar, and Mani Ratnam. However, none of them were able to successfully bring the movie to the silver screen over a course of 62 years.

In 2015, Mani Ratnam attempted to direct the movie with Vijay and Mahesh Babu in the lead role. But the project was shelved just 7 days before the shooting. But years later, the director has managed to revive the high-budget magnum opus in 2019 with Vikram, Jeyam Ravi, Karthi, and Simbu in the lead. But the movie production has also stopped again due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now it is rumoured that Mani Ratnam will be stopping the 'Ponniyin Selvan' production and focus on his next movie instead, as it will be difficult to get the call sheets for the movie's massive casts once again.

If this rumour is deemed to be true, the Ponniyin Selvan curse will likely continue for many years.
