Every filmmaker experiences highs and lows, but what matters most is what happens after a setback. For Nelson Dilipkumar, the journey from facing criticism over Beast to delivering the blockbuster Jailer became a defining chapter in his career.

When Beast, starring Thalapathy Vijay, hit theatres in 2022, expectations were high. However, the film received mixed reviews and faced criticism from audiences. Questions began to emerge about Nelson’s filmmaking choices, leaving many wondering what he would do next.

His answer came with Jailer. Teaming up with Superstar Rajinikanth in 2023, Nelson returned with a film that struck a chord with audiences and became a major box-office success, reportedly earning more than ₹600 crore worldwide. Its dark humour, quirky characters, stylish presentation and memorable mass moments helped the film stand out.

More than just a commercial hit, Jailer marked an important turning point in Nelson’s career, reminding audiences that one disappointing reception does not define a filmmaker’s entire journey.

Long before his name became associated with some of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, Nelson began his career away from the glamour of movie sets.

After completing a degree in visual communication, he joined Vijay TV, now known as Star Vijay, as an assistant scriptwriter. Working in television gave him an opportunity to learn the craft of storytelling and gradually move into directing shows and reality programmes.

His path to cinema was not without obstacles. Nelson attempted to make his feature-film directorial debut with Vettai Mannan, starring Silambarasan, around 2010. However, the project was eventually shelved amid production and budget issues. It was a setback that delayed his entry into feature films, but it did not end his ambition to become a filmmaker.

Nelson officially made his feature-film directorial debut with Kolamaavu Kokila in 2018, starring Nayanthara and featuring music by Anirudh Ravichander. The dark comedy introduced audiences to his distinctive storytelling style, built around deadpan humour, unusual characters and situations that often became funny in unexpected ways.

He followed it with Doctor in 2021, starring Sivakarthikeyan. Blending action, crime and dry humour, the film became a major commercial success and further established Nelson as a director with a style of his own. Then came Beast in 2022. Despite the star power of Vijay and the anticipation surrounding the film, its reception was mixed. For Nelson, it became a challenging moment in a career that had been gaining momentum. But his next move would prove significant.

With Jailer, Nelson brought together Rajinikanth’s screen presence and his own distinctive approach to humour, action and character-driven storytelling. The result was a major commercial hit that brought him back into the spotlight. The film’s success strengthened his position in Tamil cinema and showed how a filmmaker can move forward even after facing criticism.

Nelson also ventured into production with Filament Pictures, expanding his role in the industry beyond directing.

Nelson’s journey has now brought him to another major milestone: KHxRK, the upcoming project bringing together Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan after nearly five decades.

For a filmmaker who began by writing scripts for television, the project represents how far his career has travelled. From a shelved debut and mixed reviews to a blockbuster comeback and a film featuring two iconic stars, his journey has unfolded through both setbacks and breakthroughs.

For Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 is more than a hit. It was the film that changed the conversation around his career and set the stage for what could be one of his most talked-about projects yet.
