Obsession Star Inde Navarrette Worked With an Indian Director Before Her Hollywood Breakthrough

Obsession

Today, Inde Navarrette is one of Hollywood's fastest-rising stars, captivating audiences worldwide with her acclaimed performance as Nikki Freeman in the psychological horror hit Obsession. While many have praised her performance as "Oscar-worthy," few know that her acting journey began years earlier with an Indian filmmaker.

Long before Obsession became a global box office sensation, Navarrette landed one of her earliest leading roles in Cross Words Together, a low-budget romantic short film directed by Indian independent filmmaker Shubham Sanjay Shevade.

Released in the late 2010s with a reported budget of around US$10,000, the SAG-approved production became an important milestone in the actress' early career. In the film, Navarrette portrayed a teenager navigating the emotions of first love and young relationships, showcasing the talent that would later earn international recognition.

Although modest in scale, the project provided Navarrette with invaluable on-set experience and helped her become eligible to join SAG-AFTRA, a significant achievement for any aspiring actor hoping to build a career in Hollywood.

As Obsession continues to dominate conversations online, Shevade recently reflected on working with the actress years before her breakthrough.

Sharing memories and behind-the-scenes photos from the production, the filmmaker praised Navarrette's dedication and professionalism, recalling that she displayed remarkable commitment despite still being relatively unknown at the time.

"We are so proud of her journey," he shared, celebrating the actress' rise to international fame.

Following Cross Words Together, Navarrette gradually built her résumé with roles in television and film, steadily gaining recognition among audiences. Her career reached a new milestone in 2026 with Obsession, the psychological horror film that became one of the year's biggest surprise successes.

Produced on a reported budget of approximately US$750,000, the film went on to gross more than US$170 million worldwide, driven by strong word-of-mouth, viral moments on social media and overwhelmingly positive audience reactions.

Navarrette's performance quickly established her as one of Hollywood's most promising young talents.

Her journey is a reminder that every successful career starts somewhere. What began with a low-budget independent short film directed by an Indian filmmaker eventually led to the lead role in one of 2026's biggest cinematic success stories.

For Shubham Sanjay Shevade, it is proof that talent can be recognised long before the spotlight arrives and for Inde Navarrette, it is a wonderful thing that some of the biggest dreams begin with the smallest opportunities.
