Director R. J. Balaji has shared fresh details about the making of Karuppu, the upcoming film starring Suriya. Speaking in a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed how the project began unexpectedly and also explained the reason behind A. R. Rahman stepping away from the film.

RJ Balaji said he was working on another script when he received a call from the makers of Karuppu. He later received a second call, which he described as a special moment that gave him a strong instinct to move forward with the project. Soon after, he met Suriya and narrated the story.

According to the director, Suriya appreciated the script for its blend of emotion, action and commercial entertainment, and soon extended his full support to the film.

Speaking about the music department, RJ Balaji revealed that AR Rahman was initially set to compose for Karuppu. He said that after Mookuthi Amman, he met Rahman, who had expressed interest in collaborating.

RJ Balaji shared that he narrated the story of Karuppu to Rahman, who liked the script and held several discussions with the team. However, the composer later informed them that due to personal reasons, he was uncertain whether he could do justice to the project, especially since shooting had already begun.

Though disappointed by the development, the makers had to proceed with a replacement and subsequently brought in Sai Abhyankkar as the new composer.

RJ Balaji said the team required songs immediately as filming was already underway. He added that they were impressed by Sai Abhyankkar’s earlier work and believed his fresh musical style would suit the film well.

The director also expressed confidence in the young composer, stating that just as legends such as Ilaiyaraaja and later Anirudh Ravichander rose to prominence, Sai too has the potential to make a major mark in the industry.

Describing the film’s overall tone, RJ Balaji said Karuppu will be a complete family entertainer featuring action, emotion, romance and a socially relevant message. He noted that the film avoids portraying women negatively and aims to deliver meaningful content.

Karuppu also marks the reunion of Suriya and Trisha Krishnan after a long gap. RJ Balaji added that audiences can expect to see Suriya’s energetic and emotional screen presence return in a memorable theatrical experience.
