This news came in as a shock to Thalapathy fans…
A divorce petition has reportedly been filed before the District Court in Chengalpattu seeking dissolution of marriage between actor-politician C Joseph Vijay Chandrasekar and his wife, Sangeetha Vijay.
According to information circulating on social media and cited by sources, the petition has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), and (d), read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
In the petition, Sangeetha, 48, is said to have stated that the couple’s marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998. A ceremonial wedding was later solemnised on August 25, 1999, at Rajah Muthiah Mandram, Egmore, Chennai, in accordance with Hindu customs and rites.
The petition reportedly describes the early years of their marriage as cordial and harmonious, with Sangeetha devoting herself to managing the household and raising their two children. However, it allegedly claims that in April 2021, she discovered Vijay’s involvement in an adulterous relationship with an actress, which caused her deep emotional distress and mental suffering.

Though he is said to have assured her that the association would end, the petition reportedly contends that the relationship continued, leading to prolonged mental cruelty, emotional neglect, public embarrassment arising from social media posts, and constructive desertion.
Sources further claim that multiple attempts were made to resolve the issues amicably through legal notices, counselling and personal discussions between September 2021 and February 2022, and again between August 2024 and February 2025. However, these efforts are said to have failed to result in a settlement.
Describing the marriage as having irretrievably broken down and surviving only on paper, the petitioner has reportedly sought a decree of dissolution. She has also requested permanent alimony commensurate with Vijay’s income and social standing, continued residence in the matrimonial home in Neelankarai until disposal of the petition or provision of equivalent accommodation, and that proceedings be conducted in camera to safeguard the privacy and dignity of the parties and their children.
Vijay and Sangeetha were married on August 25, 1999, long before he rose to prominence as one of Tamil cinema’s leading actors and later entered active politics. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter. Over the years, Sangeetha has largely maintained a low profile and stayed away from public appearances.
This is not the first time speculation has surrounded their marriage. Divorce rumours have surfaced periodically, particularly due to Sangeetha’s absence from certain public and political events linked to Vijay’s growing political involvement. In 2025, her absence from a major event of his political party had once again fueled separation rumours online.
As of now, there has been no official statement from either Vijay or Sangeetha regarding the reported petition.
