The much-anticipated collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, announced in November 2025, generated significant excitement among fans and the industry alike. Tentatively titled Thalaivar 173, the film is expected to release around Pongal 2027.
Initially, the project was to be directed by Sundar C. However, within days of the announcement, the filmmaker confirmed his decision to step away, citing unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.
In a recent interaction, Sundar C spoke candidly about the reasons behind his exit. He acknowledged that the scale and expectations of the project brought immense pressure.
According to him, his filmmaking approach over the past 16 years has been guided by instinct and audience connection. However, he expressed difficulty in communicating and defending his creative vision during large-scale productions.
He further explained that projects of such magnitude often involve multiple voices and expectations, which could lead to compromises. Recognising this early, he felt it would be more appropriate to step away rather than risk not doing justice to the film or the team.
Sundar C also confirmed that he personally informed Rajinikanth about his decision before exiting the project.
Following his exit, Sundar C released a statement describing the move as a difficult but necessary choice.
He reflected on his long-standing association with both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, expressing deep respect and gratitude. He noted that the brief time spent working on the project was meaningful and that he would continue to draw inspiration from the two icons moving forward.
After Sundar C’s departure, director Cibi Chakaravarthi has come on board to helm the project.
On the work front, Kamal Haasan was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, and is currently involved in a new project. Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is set to appear next in Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.
