In February 2019, actor Silambarasan, popularly known as Simbu, filed a defamation lawsuit against producer Michael Rayappan and actor Vishal, previous President of the Tamil Nadu Film Producers' Council (TFPC), demanding Rs. 1 crore (RM 548,256) in damages for allegedly slandering his image.

Michael Rayappan blamed Simbu for the box office failure of Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (2017). The producer also claimed that he had incurred substantial losses as a consequence of the actor's frequent absences from the set throughout the production.

On March 9, when the case came up for hearing, Justice Velumurugan voiced his dissatisfaction with the producers' council for neglecting to submit any written affidavits on the case for the past two years. The Madras High Court fined TFPC Rs. 1 lakh (RM 5480) and ordered to deposit the sum with the High Court's registry by March 31.
