Since the demise of former CM of Tamil Nadu, Amma Jayalalithaa, many directors have come forward to make her biopic. At first, Jayalalithaa Amma's fans were treated with a biopic series 'Queen', loosely based on true events, created by Reshma Ghatala and co-directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and Prasath Murugesan.

Following the series, director Vijay's 'Thalaivi' featuring Bollywood's award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut is creating a stir after the release of its trailer.

When Kangana was initially cast to play the revered politician, many thought that she didn't resemble Jayalalithaa Amma but the actress agreed to gain weight to portray the politician convincingly.

Director Vijay reportedly spent nine months researching on her life and the production house has obtained a no-objection certificate from Jayalalithaa's nephew Deepak. If you haven't watched the trailer, check it out here:

At the launch of Thalaivi's trailer, Kangana, who has always been vocal about the practice of nepotism in Bollywood, revealed that there is nepotism in the South cine industry, but no groupism.

"There is no groupism and newcomers are not cut off. No one b****** about anyone. There are no blind items. Just pure work and talent," she added.

The film, releasing in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages, is scheduled to hit the theatres on April 23rd, 2021.
