Films are our staple source for entertainment. They make us cry, make us laugh and in Kollywood’s case, make us wonder, “Is this stunt for real?”

Yet, these films make millions and here’s a list of the all-time highest grossing Tamil films ever made.

While you might not be surprised with some inclusions, one or two might leave you slightly stunned. Let’s start with the lowest.

5. “Kabali” – Rs. 305 crore (RM180 million)

Leave it to Rajinikanth’s films to make it big in India. Released in 2016, “Kabali” made Rs.305 crore worldwide according to Box Office India. Directed by Pa. Ranjith and filmed in Malaysia with certain scenes set in Bangkok and Hong Kong, the film concerns a gang related territorial dispute in Kuala Lumpur.

4. “Enthiran” – Rs. 320 crore (RM188 million)

Are you really surprised to see another Rajini film on this list? “Enthiran” was a huge success, partly due to a talented graphics team, a science fiction theme and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This was the first time Rajinikanth portrayed a cyborg which turns evil. How can cinemagoers say no to this film that was released back in 2010?

3. “Baahubali: The Beginning” – Rs. 650 crore (RM383 million)

S. S. Rajamouli certainly got many people’s attention when he released this epic action film in 2015. “Baahubali: The Beginning” was dubbed into Malayalam and Hindi while it was shot in Telugu and Tamil. The film was well received for its amazing cinematography and according to First Post, made Rs.650 crore worldwide!

2. “2.0” – Rs. 800 crore (RM472 million)

A sequel to 2010’s “Enthiran”, this film saw Rajinikanth reprise his role as Chitti the robot to battle Akshay Kumar’s villain, Pakshi Rajan. The film is about a former ornithologist who seeks revenge of cell phone users because mobile technology caused the decline of birds. Times Now News states that “2.0” has made Rs. 800 crore in box office sales worldwide.

1. “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” – Rs. 1810 crore (RM1.06 billion)

S. S. Rajamouli bested his previous record when he released “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” in 2017. Just like “Baahubali: The Beginning”, its sequel was filmed in Telugu and Tamil and was dubbed in Malayalam, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian. It remains to be the highest grossing Indian film made to date with Rs. 1810 crore collected worldwide according to Box Office India.

Would this record be bested by another film of epic proportions in the very near future? It remains to be seen.
