Vijay is known to be one of the few stars who is also very bankable. He is the only actor in Kollywood whose films have consistently performed at the box office in recent years; and his films on TV always have a high viewership regardless of its box office performance. This remarkable feat makes him a very impressive performer.
It comes to no surprise that the investors have high hopes in him - the demand for his latest film "Bigil" gives clear indication of it. The Atlee Kumar-directorial is expected to set a new benchmark for him as its pre-release business is expected to cross the Rs 220 crore (RM 132 million) mark, a feat that only Rajinikanth's films have so far achieved in Kollywood.
The makers of "Bigil" have reportedly closed the overseas rights deals by selling it to United India Exporters and X Gen Studio for a record price of Rs 30 crore (RM 18 million). The audio rights have been acquired by Sony Music for a rumoured price of Rs 3.5 crore (RM 2 million), while Sun TV has bagged the satellite rights of all languages (except Hindi) for Rs 30 crore. The sale of the Hindi dubbing and satellite rights is expected to be between Rs 25-28 crore (RM 12 million).
There are a few distributors who are interested in acquiring the Tamil Nadu rights for the film, funded by AGS Entertainment. If the rumours are to be believed, they are willing to shell out about Rs 80 crore (RM 48 million) for it.
The numbers clearly indicate that Vijay's popularity and marketability have reached greater heights now as his films had not earlier crossed the Rs 200 crore mark.
Recently, Atlee tweeted a birthday wish to the star saying, "Here comes my Bday gift to @actorvijay Anna. #Bigil Ennoda anna Ennoda thalapathy."
"Bigil" is a sports action film with Vijay playing a dual role in it, one of which is a footballer.
