Kalki's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan' is a highly celebrated novel, which depicts the story of Raja Raja Chola I.

This novel has been translated, reprinted and republished many times, and was even adapted into stage plays, audio books, and book series. However, when it came to turning it into a Tamil movie, it was jinxed!

The first attempt to make a Ponniyin Selvan movie began in the year 1958, but the jinx has yet to be broken in 2019.

A Magnum Opus

Ponniyin Selvan is a true Tamil classic which interlaces myth and fiction. This novel was written by Kalki Krishnamurthi in the year 1951, and has approximately 2,600 pages (5 volumes).

Ponniyin Selvan tells the story of Arulmozhivarman before he became the Great King Raja Raja Cholan and the conspiracy against the Chola Kingdom.

The story brings together elements such as love, revenge, sacrifice, and battles, making it one of the best novels of all time.

The 61-Year Curse

Ponniyin Selvan has been on the wish list of some moviemakers for a very long time.

It was MG Ramachandran (MGR) who first secured the rights to produce the film for Rs10,000 in the year 1958. The cast of the movie includes MGR, Vyjayanthimala, Gemini Ganesan, Padmini, Savitri, Saroja Devi and Nambiar.

Despite his desire to adapt the novel into a movie, the project was shelved after MGR met an accident, though others claim filming was cancelled due to financial constraints.

After years, MGR approached Bharathiraja to direct the movie under MGR Pictures, with Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in the lead. Again the movie was shelved.

Kamal Haasan himself was the next to try his luck with the movie, but he could not get it going either.

Rumours later surfaced that director Shankar tried to make the movie with Vijay, Vishal and Vikram in the lead. But again, the rumours remained mere rumours.

In 2015, Mani Ratnam announced he will be bringing Ponniyin Selvan to the silver screen with Vijay, Mahesh Babu and Anushka Shetty in the lead. But the project was shelved just 7 days before the shooting, as the director was sure that he wouldn't be able to recover the 50-crore budget of the movie.

Now, after his success with Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Mani Ratnam is once again attempting to revive this project with Vikram, Jeyam Ravi, Karthi and Simbu in the lead. Vijay Sethupathi, who was roped in earlier, has opted out due to his tight schedule.

At the same time, Soundarya Rajinikanth, who was struggling to make a web-series out of the novel, has also announced that she will be reviving her project.

Will Mani Ratnam finally break the jinx and will Ponniyin Selvan be adapted into a movie after 61 years?
