A plethora of Tamil school students have once again made headlines by participating in Malaysia’s grand attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest drumming lesson which was held at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Saturday, September 28. According to few reports, over 500 Tamil school students nationwide recently participated in a record-breaking attempt..

The event saw close to 4,000 drums reverberating throughout the stadium, creating an electric atmosphere as participants from various backgrounds united to make history with Chinese drums. The performance also showcased Malaysia’s rich multicultural heritage, starting with a lively Malay kompang and gendang performance that had children dancing to the beats. Following the drumming lesson, the audience enjoyed a traditional urumi melam performance, featuring Indian drums commonly heard during Thaipusam celebrations.

The drumming lesson, led by Shi Yin, was designed to be simple, allowing everyone to stay in sync. This record attempt followed an earlier achievement in January, when the organizers set the Malaysia Book of Records for the most Oriental drummers, with 508 participants.

Students from over 130 schools across the country, including Orang Asli children from Negeri Sembilan, participated in the event. Despite the enthusiasm, some rural schools faced challenges in acquiring resources and instruments for drumming. The diversity of participants extended beyond ethnicity, with drummers ranging in age from six to 91 years old.

Did they break the record? The previous Guinness World Record for the largest drumming lesson, set in Austria in 2019, involved 2,285 drummers. According to Guang Liang, the event had nearly 4,000 drummers, surpassing the previous record.

Best wishes to the students and the entire team for making this extraordinary achievement possible!
