For some, rejection can be the catalyst for a whole new chapter of growth and achievement. For Malaysian student Zul Hakim Zulhaimi, his academic journey truly began after he faced rejection from every local university he applied to.

With just 2As in SPM and no offers from public institutions, Zul could have easily given up. But instead, he took a bold step forward and in doing so, rewrote his future entirely.

In 2018, Zul’s SPM results didn’t meet conventional expectations. Coming from an arts stream background, he had little exposure to the science subjects typically required for engineering. But that didn’t stop him.

Determined to pursue a more technical path, Zul enrolled at the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) to pursue a diploma in Mechatronic Engineering Technology, a decision that would shape the course of his life.

The transition was anything but easy. Jumping into an engineering course without a science foundation meant facing steep learning curves. Yet, Zul remained undeterred. His perseverance paid off, and he graduated in 2021 with flying colours.

Recognising his potential and commitment, MARA awarded Zul a scholarship to continue his studies abroad. He chose Purdue University in the United States, one of the world’s top institutions for engineering.

At Purdue, Zul wasted no time. He immersed himself in rigorous coursework, hands-on projects, and leadership opportunities, proving that he could not only survive, but thrive in one of the most competitive academic environments in the world.

One of his most notable achievements was designing a smart exoskeleton prototype integrated with force and angle sensors. The innovation was aimed at both educational and industrial applications, showcasing his ability to blend practicality with cutting-edge tech.

Zul’s impact extended beyond his academic projects. He served as a Teaching Assistant for a Lean Six Sigma course, guiding fellow students while sharpening his leadership skills. He also represented his team at the Purdue Tech Expo, presenting their work to both academic peers and industry professionals.

Although his scholarship was intended to run until Fall 2025, Zul’s hard work and consistency allowed him to graduate ahead of schedule in Spring 2025 with not one, but two degrees:

- Mechatronics Engineering Technology
- Automation and Systems Integration Engineering Technology

To top it off, he was awarded the Golden Honor Cord, a recognition reserved for Purdue’s top-performing students.

Zul’s story is a powerful reminder that your starting point doesn’t define your destination. He didn’t begin his journey with perfect grades, but with grit, resilience, and an unshakeable belief in his potential, he carved out a path few would have imagined.

In a world where academic success is often narrowly defined, Zul’s journey shines as a beacon of hope for students who may not follow the traditional route, but are no less capable of greatness.

Congratulations, Zul. You've not only achieved academic excellence, but you’ve also become an inspiration to those finding their own way forward.
