Aadi Chevvai Valarpirai Ashtami Believed to Remove Ancestral Curses and Bring Divine Blessings

Among the many auspicious days in Aadi, Tuesdays hold a special place for devotees of Goddess Amman. This year, the significance is even greater as Aadi Tuesday coincides with the Waxing Moon Ashtami (Valarpirai Ashtami), a day especially dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairava.

According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping Goddess Amman, Lord Murugan and Kala Bhairava on this sacred day is believed to remove obstacles, bring peace to the family, improve health, and help devotees overcome financial and spiritual challenges.

Why is Aadi Tuesday so special?

Tuesday is associated with the planet Mars (Chevvai), which governs courage, land, property, debts and physical strength. Devotees believe that sincere prayers offered on this day help reduce the negative effects associated with Mars while bringing stability and success in life.

Many devotees also perform special prayers to Goddess Durga during Rahu Kalam on Tuesdays, believing that the Goddess removes fear, protects her devotees and clears difficulties standing in their path.

Lord Murugan, who is closely associated with Mars, is also worshipped on Tuesdays. It is believed that offering prayers to Murugan on this auspicious day blesses devotees with courage, success and protection from obstacles.

The significance of Valarpirai Ashtami

While every Ashtami carries spiritual importance, the Waxing Moon Ashtami during Aadi is particularly revered for the worship of Lord Kala Bhairava.

Kala Bhairava is regarded as the fierce protector of Lord Shiva's devotees and the guardian of time. He is believed to remove negativity, protect devotees from unseen obstacles and guide them through difficult phases of life.

Many devotees observe a fast on this day before visiting Shiva temples to seek Bhairava's blessings.

Women usually begin the day with an early morning bath before lighting lamps in their home altar and offering prayers to Goddess Amman. When visiting the temple, devotees often carry red flowers such as hibiscus, roses or marigolds, along with turmeric, kumkumam, coconuts and red cloth to offer during worship.

One of the traditional practices associated with Kala Bhairava worship is offering either eight one-rupee coins or 108 one-rupee coins while chanting prayers. The number eight symbolises Ashtami as well as the eight forms of divine prosperity represented by Ashta Lakshmi.

Lighting a ghee lamp is another important ritual. Some devotees also prepare a sukku vilakku (dry ginger lamp), which is believed to symbolise the burning away of negativity while inviting positive energy into the home.

Rather than praying about hardships, devotees are encouraged to focus their prayers on the life they wish to pray life filled with peace, happiness, prosperity and divine grace. Since this is the Waxing Moon phase, it is traditionally considered an ideal time to pray for growth, abundance and new beginnings.

Next, up for Bhairava worship

According to long-standing Hindu tradition, worshipping Kala Bhairava on Aadi Valarpirai Ashtami is believed to bring several spiritual benefits.

Devotees believe the prayers may help reduce the negative effects of planetary influences such as Rahu, Ketu, the Sun and the Moon. It is also believed to remove obstacles, ease financial difficulties, protect against negative energies and strengthen one's spiritual journey.

Many also pray on this day seeking relief from ancestral karmas (Pitru Dosham), family curses and generational difficulties. While these beliefs are rooted in Hindu tradition and vary among individuals, devotees continue to observe them with faith and devotion.

The month of Aadi reminds devotees that faith has the power to transform both the mind and the soul. Whether one visits a temple, lights a lamp at home or simply spends time in prayer, the intention remains the same to surrender worries, seek divine protection and move forward with hope.
