Aathi Kallumalai Murugan : The Divine Origin of Ipoh’s Sacred Hill

Kallumalai

The Kallumalai Murugan Temple in Ipoh is deeply revered by devotees, yet many may not know that long before the present shrine was established, Aathi Kallumalaiyan Murugan, also known as Athimalayan Murugan, stood as the original and foremost place of worship. This sacred form of Murugan is believed to have resided here first, making the site spiritually significant and divinely powerful.

The divine history of this holy place was recently brought to light by Malaysian Tamil vlogger Midar Nadia, who explored the early Kallumalaiyan area through the heartfelt memories of an elderly woman who has lived in the vicinity since she was 16 years old. Her experiences offer a glimpse into the spiritual presence that continues to surround the cave.

According to her, there were moments when villagers witnessed a young boy running playfully within the cave, only to vanish mysteriously when followed, a vision many believe to be the divine Lord Murugan himself. Within the cave, devotees can also observe naturally formed stone images resembling Lord Vinayagar and his mouse, a sacred lingam, and a stone bearing features that closely resemble Murugan, reinforcing the belief that the deity chose this place to manifest.

Before the cave collapse, it is believed that seven Kanni Kulam existed behind the lingam, each holding immense spiritual purity. Following the collapse, the pathway leading behind the lingam was completely sealed by earth, leaving these sacred spaces hidden from human view but not from divine presence. Such divine mysteries only deepen the devotion and yearning of those who hear these stories.

Recalling the tragic cave collapse, the aunt shared that an elderly man had once warned the people around the area that the cave was unstable. His words, believed to be divinely inspired, were ignored. That very evening, the cave collapsed, claiming 35 lives, a sorrowful event remembered with reverence and reflection even today.

Despite its profound spiritual importance, many devotees are still unaware of the path leading to Aathi Kallumalai Murugan. Understanding this, the official Athi Kallumalaiyan page has shared directions and guidance on social media to help devotees reach this sacred abode.
