End-of-An-Era-Malaysian-Squash-Queen-Nicol-David-is-Retiring

Datuk Nicol Ann David needs no introduction. Her unprecedented achievements in the world of squash speak for themself. In a career spanning over 20 years, the 35-year-old has proven that she's undoubtedly the greatest squash player of all time.

On Monday, however, the Penangite announced on Twitter that she will be retiring in June, saying 'The moment is coming but the dream remains'.

In an interview with PSA World Tour, Nicol revealed,"This decision has been thought through for quite some time and I do know that this is my last season."

"My mind and body have battled it out to stay at the very top of my game for such a long time that I feel that I only have this last big push left for the final season to give it all I have before I enter the next phase of my life."

Tweets of best wishes poured in for Nicol as she announced her retirement.

However, some Malaysians were disappointed that her retirement came before squash becomes an Olympic sport, feeling that they were not ready for Nicol to retire without leaving her mark in the Olympics.

Start of a Glorious Sports Career

Where did it all began? Nicol first came into the spotlight after winning her inaugural Women's World Junior Squash Championship in 1999, after which she was unstoppable.  In 2000, she became the first woman to secure the World Junior Championship for a second time. When asked about when she realised her passion for the sport, Nicol answered PSA World Tour in 2012:

“It started off with my sisters, they would play most days,” said David.

“They were incredibly instrumental in my development. They did a bit of coaching and helped out with the junior development programme. I was part of that at the time.

“It was great, they always went on court with me when I wanted to practice, even though they were bigger and stronger than me.”

A Glance at Her Record-Breaking Feat

Nicol was voted as the women's 'Greatest of All Time' (G.O.A.T) by squash players and fans around the world.

What's Next?

Nicol is a symbol of pride for Malaysians, a testament to hard work and sheer determination. We will definitely miss her! But we know for a fact that her journey won't stop here. She will continue to contribute to Malaysia in her own way. Nicol brought some her of plans to light. She would like to 'give back' in 3 ways:

1. Working closely with Professional Squash Association (PSA) to bring awareness of the sport globally and set up a support team for professional squash athletes

2. Helping the younger generation of Malaysia in reaching their fullest potential in sports via the Nicol David Foundation

3. Sharing her inspiring story, 'Nurturing Belief', through a series of talks and writings

Her Final Words?
