The Brihadishvara temple was built by the great Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century.

He is known for his long list of accomplishments in military conquests, religious tolerance and as a patron of arts and architecture.

It is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as the "Great Living Chola Temples", along with the Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temples.

It was originally built around a moat - the Gopura (the main temple), the tower, inscriptions, frescoes and sculptures were mostly influenced by Shaivism.

The temple is now surrounded by walls that were added after the 16th century.

Built out of granite, the Vimana tower is one of the tallest in South India. The temple has a massive colonnaded prakara (enclosure) and one of the largest Shiva lingas in India.

It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.
