“When you can dream of it, you can achieve it.”

As the saying goes from starting her journey by peddling on the sidewalk, Kala Rani has remarkably grown her organic vegetable business through the power of social media, boosting her monthly income by nearly 50 percent. Alongside her husband, N Rajah, 54, she operates at the modern market in Taman Ehsan, Kepong. Their business has gained significant popularity after active promotion on TikTok, amassing 50,000 views.

“Previously, I never utilized social media for business promotion. Now, I am adept at using TikTok to attract customers. Our net income, which used to be RM1,200, has now increased to RM2,500 per month,” Kala Rani shared.

Kala Rani attributes much of her success to the Selangor Platform Entrepreneurship Training Program (U-PLATS), which she joined in September 2023. “Being a participant in the U-PLATS program has provided me with strategies to advance our business and expand our market. The program teaches promotion techniques, income enhancement, communication skills, entrepreneurship, social media, e-commerce, and digital content creation.”

The 43-years old business woman began her business in 2021 in Selayang after leaving her job as a kindergarten teacher. Today, she sells over 15 types of organic vegetables and offers delivery services every Saturday to meet customer demand. “In addition to our permanent premises in Kepong, we now deliver vegetables to areas such as Ampang, Sungai Buloh, and Petaling Jaya every Saturday, thanks to our growing popularity.”

She encourages other traders to join U-PLATS, citing its significant benefits and success. “For those wanting to expand their business, U-PLATS is highly beneficial. Change requires effort, and finding the right solutions is crucial,” she said.

Kala Rani's success story was highlighted by Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor, Head of Social Responsibility and Corporate Communications at Selangor Menteri Besar (Incorporation) or MBI, on Facebook. According to him, her success exemplifies MBI's commitment to helping traders progress through the PLATS initiative, which has been in place since 2020.
