The heartbreaking story of a baby boy’s body being frozen in a morgue for two weeks at a private hospital in Klang has gone viral, sparking outrage and disbelief across social media. The issue first came to light when Mr. Wan Cai, founder of the Special Funeral Van Unit (UKVJ), shared the incident on Facebook, drawing significant attention and varied reactions from the public.

The Birth and tragic demise of Baby Muhammad Adham Mikail

On November 24, baby Muhammad Adham Mikail was born with cyclops syndrome, a rare condition that left him with one eye, no nose, and no anus. Tragically, he passed away 30 minutes after birth due to the severity of his condition.

According to Mr. Wan Cai, UKVJ faced significant challenges in preparing the baby’s remains for burial because his body had been completely frozen. They had to use hot water mixed with tap water to soften the baby’s joints and prepare him for burial.

The situation arose when the father was reportedly unable to pay the hospital bill of approximately RM 3k. The father had rushed to the hospital after being informed of his wife’s condition while at work.

The father claimed that the hospital refused to release the baby’s body or discharge the mother until the bill was fully settled. The mother, who was admitted to the ward after childbirth, was also allegedly detained. The baby’s body was ultimately buried in Selangor on December 9, after a two-week delay caused by these circumstances.

Let's have a look at the Hospital’s statement:

On December 11, the hospital involved, Hospital Bersalin Razif (HBR), issued a statement denying allegations of withholding the baby's remains. HBR stated that the father was responsible for the burial delay, as he had failed to promptly arrange for the burial despite being permitted to do so before settling the bill.

The hospital also alleged that the couple was not legally married and that the mother had not attended antenatal check-ups. However, these claims were refuted by Mr. Wan Cai, who presented evidence of the couple’s marriage certificate.

Clarifications from Wan Cai

In response to HBR’s statement, Wan Cai clarified that the couple had provided their original marriage certificate, disproving the hospital’s claim of their unmarried status. He also noted that the burial permit had been signed, and the father had been informed to arrange the burial.

According to Wan Cai, the father left the hospital, claiming he had to attend to another matter, which resulted in the hospital waiting for him to collect the baby’s body.

Ongoing investigation

The case has attracted the attention of the Ministry of Health (MOH), which has initiated an investigation into the hospital’s handling of the matter. Health Minister Dr. Dzulkefly stated that the issue is complex due to conflicting allegations from both parties.
