Investigators confirmed on Sunday that DNA evidence links Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, to the crime. According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), blood and skin traces found beneath the victim's fingernails match the injuries sustained by Roy, further solidifying his involvement in the case that has shocked the nation.
Autopsy Findings in the Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
The post-mortem report revealed that the victim's death resulted from smothering and throttling. Multiple signs of struggle and injury were evident, suggesting that the victim, despite being in a half-asleep state, fought back
against her attacker. The autopsy showed:
- Cause of Death: The victim died due to gagging, with multiple signs of struggle and injury on her body.
- Injuries: Blood stains were found on the victim's face and eyes, along with scratch marks on various parts of her body. There was also bleeding from her private parts.
- Marks: Aberration and bruise marks were present on her face, particularly from the eyes to the neck.
- Resistance: The victim tried to resist, resulting in deep scratch marks and injuries on the hands of the accused.
Rumours Dispelled by Autopsy Report
The autopsy report also debunked several rumours that had circulated after the incident, which had ignited protests across the state. Contrary to some reports, a Kolkata police source told TOI that no evidence of semen from three individuals was found during the autopsy. "It is impossible to distinguish semen from three individuals with the naked eye during an autopsy," the source explained.
Additionally, social media claims that the victim's pelvic bone had been broken were proven false by the post-mortem report, which showed no such injuries.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), now leading the investigation, has begun a psychological assessment of the 33-year-old main accused, according to an earlier report by ANI.
Meanwhile, a Kolkata Police official mentioned that the initial investigation had brought up the names of a senior political leader and the son of another politician. However, due to a lack of solid evidence, they were not considered suspects. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal stated that arrests could not be made based solely on statements without concrete evidence.
