At 85, Datuk Victor Isaacs has proven that passion for learning knows no age limit. The seasoned lawyer, who recently earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). What a milestone for this man!
It took Victor six years of relentless effort to complete his PhD, which explored the role of professionals in drafting laws related to euthanasia in Malaysia, a topic that delicately balances legal and medical ethics. His research, though challenging, was driven by a deep sense of purpose and compassion.
“I recommended that UniSZA set up a palliative care home on campus to support terminally ill patients,” he shared after receiving his scroll at the UniSZA Convocation Ceremony. He believes such initiatives are vital to ensure continuous care for patients who may no longer receive hospital treatment but still deserve dignity and comfort in their final days.
Victor admitted that age brought its share of difficulties, long study hours, physical exhaustion, and moments of doubt, but he never allowed these to hold him back. Even after losing his beloved wife six years ago, he found strength in his pursuit of knowledge.
“Knowledge has always been a part of who I am. Losing my wife was heartbreaking, but it only strengthened my resolve to keep learning,” he said with quiet determination.
Victor’s story is a testament to the idea that learning is not limited by age or circumstance, it is a lifelong journey that continues to give purpose and meaning.
Meanwhile, another graduand, Dr Zamri Chik, 59, is also redefining the boundaries of academic ambition. Having already completed two PhDs in education at UniSZA, the former research officer at the Terengganu Strategic & Integrity Institute (TSIS) is now preparing to pursue his third doctorate, this time in political science.
“My goal is not to chase titles but to help students, especially with their research,” said Dr Zamri, whose work has supported students and researchers in Malaysia, Jordan, Nigeria, and Palestine.
“Starting my first PhD was difficult, but by the second one, I found it easier. Now, as I prepare for my third, I feel confident because I understand the process,” he added with a smile.
