In an inspiring journey to lifelong learning, Dr. Vijendran Rajenthiram, a dentist with nearly four decades of experience, graduated with a law degree on November 16 at the age of 69. His journey highlights that stepping out of one’s comfort zone and pursuing new ambitions is possible at any stage of life.
“We should never stop learning,” he shared. “It could be simple things like picking up a new skill or instrument. It keeps the mind active, and I think that’s what keeps us young.”
Vijendran’s decision to pursue law was driven by a long-standing passion that began in his youth while watching legal dramas like Perry Mason and admiring iconic figures like the late Karpal Singh. Despite his initial choice to pursue dentistry, the pandemic provided him with the opportunity to revisit this dream.
In January 2022, he enrolled at Brickfields Asia College for a law degree from the University of Hertfordshire. Adapting to a modern learning environment proved challenging but manageable. Online classes during the first two years required adjustment, but he embraced the shift with enthusiasm. However, he maintained a preference for traditional books, stating, “I still like physical books. I’ll read them first and search the internet afterwards for additional information.”
Juggling work and studies was no small feat for Vijendran, who manages two dental clinics in the Klang Valley with his wife, Dr. Usha Devi Balakrishnan. Weeknights and weekends were devoted to classes, leaving little room for social gatherings. “I did not attend many family functions over the past three years,” he admitted.
Late nights and demanding examinations, including assignments requiring up to 2,000 words per question, tested his resolve. Yet, the unwavering support of his wife and three children kept him motivated. “They encouraged me a lot. My wife sent me to classes and picked me up. I can’t thank her enough.”
Despite being surrounded by classmates mostly in their 20s, Vijendran found the experience energizing. “They were very good and helpful at all times,” he said, adding that their youthful spirit kept him feeling lively.
Reflecting on his journey, he emphasized the value of legal education for everyone. “School leavers or working adults should take a course in law. Knowledge of the law is very useful,” he said.
Vijendran views this accomplishment as a steppingstone. “It gives me the confidence that I can do much more,” he said, hinting at the possibility of enrolling in the Bar Professional Course to qualify as a practising lawyer.
His advice to senior citizens considering new pursuits is straightforward: “Don’t think twice. Go ahead and do it. You have nothing to lose.”
There’s no denying that, Vijendran’s remarkable achievement has already inspired many, with others sharing their renewed ambitions after hearing his story. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to learning, growth, and pursuing one’s dreams.
