In the world of Tamil cinema, certain films from the 80s and 90s have left an indelible mark on audiences, continuing to resonate emotionally even today. One such film is Muthal Mariyadhai, a timeless classic that remains popular among viewers. Directed by the renowned filmmaker Bharathiraja, the film was released in 1985 and was produced by Bharathiraja himself.
Muthal Mariyadhai features a stellar cast, including legendary actors such as Sivaji Ganesan, Radha, Sathyaraj, Vadivukkarasi, Deepan, Ranjini, and Janagaraj. Set against a rural backdrop, the film beautifully captures the essence of village life, earning it a special place in the hearts of the audience.
SPB revealed, "I was originally supposed to sing in Bharathiraja's first film, 16 Vayathinile, but I couldn’t due to a sore throat. Similarly, I was also considered for the role played by Sivaji Sir in Muthal Mariyadhai. While I’m certain I could never have matched his performance, I believe I would have brought something unique to the role."
However, due to scheduling conflicts, he was unable to commit to the 45 days required for the shoot. At that time, he was recording four to five songs per day and offered to participate in the film in multiple shorter stints. Unfortunately, this arrangement wasn’t feasible for the production, and he had to pass on the opportunity.
Despite not appearing in the film, he lent his voice to the song "Parkuthu Dharuma." Although his version of the song was recorded, it didn’t make it into the final cut of the film. Instead, the version sung by Malaysia Vasudevan was featured in the movie.
Reflecting on this, he added, "Even though I couldn’t act in Muthal Mariyadhai, I’m glad that the film turned out well. It remains a classic that continues to be cherished by audiences."
