Malayalam cinema star Prithviraj Sukumaran recently attended the teaser launch of his upcoming directorial venture, L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal. During the event, he revealed that he was once given the opportunity to direct Tamil superstar Rajinikanth in a film but was unable to proceed due to time constraints.

Prithviraj, who made his directorial debut with Lucifer in 2019, shared that A. Subaskaran of Lyca Productions had initially approached him to helm a project featuring Rajinikanth under the banner.

"Subaskaran sir first reached out to me with an incredible opportunity, to direct a film for Lyca Productions starring Rajinikanth sir. As a new director, it was a huge honour, and I genuinely tried my best to develop a script that would do justice to the project," Prithviraj explained.

However, the timeline set by the producer proved challenging. "Since I'm only a part-time director, I couldn't come up with a script within the required timeframe. Unfortunately, the project didn’t materialize," he added.
Despite this, the interaction led to a lasting friendship between Prithviraj and Subaskaran, which ultimately paved the way for their collaboration on L2: Empuraan.

"In the meantime, Subaskaran sir asked me, 'If you can’t direct a film with Rajini, what are you working on next?' I told him about my dream of making a sequel to Lucifer. I shared a rough outline of the story, and to my surprise, he asked, 'How can I be a part of this dream of yours?' I wasn’t expecting that at all. I’m truly grateful to him for his support," Prithviraj said.

Though his directorial debut with Rajinikanth didn't come to fruition, Prithviraj’s journey has now led him to helm one of Malayalam cinema’s most highly anticipated sequels.
