Yes, you read that right! While Superstar Rajinikanth has delivered countless iconic performances that shaped Indian cinema, there were also a few blockbuster films that he almost starred in, but turned down for one reason or another. Can you imagine how different these movies might have been?
Here’s a list of well-known films that Rajini rejected and why:
1. Mudhalvan (1999)
Directed by: S. Shankar
Rajinikanth was the first choice to play the lead role of Pugazhendhi in this political thriller. But since he was openly supporting DMK leader M. Karunanidhi at the time, Rajini felt it wouldn’t be appropriate to star in a politically charged film and backed out. The role eventually went to Arjun Sarja, and the rest is history!
2. Indian (1996)
Directed by: S. Shankar
The iconic dual role of Senapathy and Chandra Bose was initially offered to Rajinikanth. While no official reason was given for his rejection, the role eventually went to Kamal Haasan, who completely owned it and even won a National Award!
3. Papanasam (2015)
Tamil remake of Malayalam hit Drishyam. This gripping family thriller was offered to Rajinikanth first, but he reportedly had some creative differences with the script and chose to opt out. The film was then taken up by Kamal Haasan, whose performance was widely praised.
4. Dhruva Natchathiram
Directed by: Gautham Vasudev Menon
This long-delayed spy thriller, starring Vikram, was initially offered to both Suriya and Rajinikanth. Rajini was said to have liked the script but still passed on the opportunity for undisclosed reasons.
5. Tirangaa (1993)
Directed by: Mehul Kumar
This patriotic action film had Rajinikanth as the top choice to play Shivajirao Wagle, alongside Raaj Kumar. But reports suggest Rajini declined the role due to the presence of Raaj Kumar, leading to a different direction for the film.
It’s fascinating to think about how these films might have turned out with Rajinikanth in the lead. But as they say everything happens for a reason. And Rajini still remains the unbeatable Thalaivar in our hearts!
