"A teacher’s role is not just to impart knowledge, but to ignite curiosity, inspire creativity, and shape the future."

These words perfectly embody the philosophy of K. Thipanraj, a Science and Multimedia teacher from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Taman Sutera, whose passion for innovation has earned him the prestigious ‘Asian Education Awards 2024.’

With 42 successful innovation projects under his guidance, Thipanraj has set an example for educators across the globe by showcasing the transformative power of teaching.

We had the privilege of speaking with Thipanraj, whose work has inspired not only his students but also a nation. Here's what he had to share about his journey, passion, and vision for the future of education.

Hailing from a humble beginning, and since ever on his young age, Thipan always been passionate about problem-solving and creating solutions that can make a difference. According to him, teaching allows him to share this passion with students, sparking their curiosity and encouraging them to think critically.

Science, technology, and innovation are ever-evolving fields, and he sees teaching as an opportunity to prepare students to thrive in this dynamic world while making learning exciting and practical.

“It’s an incredible honour and a humbling experience. Representing Malaysia is not just about personal achievement but also about showcasing the potential of our educators and students to the world. It motivates me to continue pushing boundaries, not only for myself but for the pride and progress of our nation.”

It's a beautiful thing to be a teacher, to have the opportunity to inspire and guide young minds towards success. But even more satisfying is seeing the students achieve their goals and reach new heights.

The most rewarding part of teaching is seeing students grow, not just academically but also in their confidence and character. Watching them apply what they’ve learned to real-world problems and succeed in their own ways makes every effort worthwhile. Knowing that I’ve played a small role in shaping their future is deeply fulfilling.”

“The idea stemmed from a practical issue in my school: during school holidays, no one was available to feed the chickens, which led to unfortunate consequences. I wanted to create a sustainable, efficient solution while teaching students the importance of problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork. Using recycled materials and automation, we developed a project that addressed the issue and aligned with environmental sustainability."

By involving students in every step of the innovation process, from brainstorming to prototyping, they develop critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork skills. These projects empower students to take ownership of their learning, keeping them engaged and motivated.

“I focus on experiential learning; connecting theoretical concepts to hands-on projects that solve real-world problems,” says Thipan.

“I envision an education system that fosters creativity, innovation, and inclusivity, equipping students with the skills needed for the 21st century. This includes integrating technology, promoting interdisciplinary learning, and cultivating a mindset of lifelong learning. As a Teacher Ambassador, I hope to inspire others to embrace these values and work collaboratively toward this vision.”

Asking about that one piece of advice that he would be giving to other educators looking to create meaningful impacts in their schools and communities:

“Start by understanding the needs of your students and community. Focus on projects that address real challenges and inspire collaboration. Never be afraid to take risks or think outside the box. Most importantly, believe in your ability to make a difference, and don’t hesitate to seek support and partnerships to bring your ideas to life. Teaching is a powerful tool for change, and every small step can lead to significant impacts,” he concluded.

Congratulations, Thipan! Thank you for being an amazing teacher and for always going above and beyond for your students.
