The family of the late S Vinosiny is taking legal action against Universiti Utara Malaysia for RM3 million in compensation. Vinosiny, aged 21 at the time, was found dead in her dormitory room, and a subsequent post-mortem confirmed electric shock as the cause of death.

S Vinosiny's father, R Sivakumar, 55, has taken legal action by naming the university as the defendant in a suit filed at the Alor Setar High Court on 28 February. The statement of claim emphasizes the university's responsibility and legal obligation, citing provisions of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 and Electricity Regulations 1994, to ensure the safety of its students.

According to the victim's father, the university allegedly breached its duty of care by failing to ensure Vinosiny's safety from electric shock and neglecting to properly maintain the electrical installation. The legal filing contends that the university did not take adequate precautions to prevent injury, damage, or death resulting from electric shock, allowing the continued use of damaged electrical equipment.

The Alor Setar sessions court, under Section 333 of the Criminal Procedure Code, had previously confirmed electric shock as the cause of Vinosiny's untimely demise. The family, facing obstacles in their pursuit of the truth, is now seeking both justice and compensation for the loss of their daughter.
