Have you ever wondered by you feel especially refreshed after a day at the beach? You are not imagining it because it has been scientifically proven that the seaside can do wonders for your mind and body.
Sea air contains tiny droplets of sea water enriched with salt, iodine, magnesium and trace elements, which are scattered into the air by wind and waves.
Known as surf-generated aerosols they accelerate our ability to absorb oxygen. Negative ions also balance levels of serotonin, a body chemical linked with mood and stress, which is why after a holiday you feel more alert, relaxed and energised!
Need more convincing? Well, check out our reasons on why you should visit the beach more often!1. Stress reduction
Just sitting and listening to the waves is regarded as the ultimate for relaxation and stress relief. The rhythmic sound helps relax your mind and clear your thoughts which improve your ability to think and meditate as well as enhance your problem-solving skills.
2. Better sleep
It isn't a myth that you sleep better by the sea. A combination of the sea air with its negative ions and the sun's energy which raises your body temperature result in you feeling tired. Add to that the all-round feel good factor you have on the beach makes you happy and relaxed which aids a good night's sleep.
3. Vitamin D
A little exposure to the sun has actually proven to increase the physical and emotional wellbeing. The ultraviolet rays stimulate the production of vitamin D, which enables our bodies to make good use of phosphorus and calcium, promoting strong bones and cell division.
4. The healing properties of the sea's salt water
Swimming in the sea increases your white blood cell count which boosts your immune system. It also induces a steady breathing pattern which has a calming effect on the mind, and because sea water is naturally mineral-rich, especially with magnesium, it also has exceptional healing properties for skin conditions and relaxes the muscles, reduces stress and helps induce sleep.
5. Time away from the gadgets
A break from all the gadgets and electronics is good for the mind, body and soul. Studies have shown that being constantly connected and stimulated by social media and the internet leads to stress, loss of sleep and depression. So, put the gadgets away and spend some time on the beach.
