When Enai Noki Paayum Thota began production in early 2016, it was one of the most anticipated projects in Tamil cinema. The film marked the first collaboration between acclaimed director Gautham Vasudev Menon and actor Dhanush. Initially planned as a quick project to be completed within two months, the film faced significant delays due to financial and logistical challenges. After several postponed release dates, it finally premiered in November 2019 to mixed reviews and an underwhelming box office performance.

Since its release, Gautham Vasudev Menon has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the final product. In fact, he has recently gone so far as to disown the film entirely.

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Gautham humorously dismissed the film when its title was mentioned. “What film was that? I don’t remember making that film. I only recall a song (‘Maruvaarthai’) from it,” he joked, adding, “No, not me; somebody else must have made it.”

Further elaborating during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Gautham admitted that Enai Noki Paayum Thota is the only project he regrets doing in his career. While emphasizing that he is not shirking responsibility for the film, he explained that his remarks stem from his way of distancing himself from a project he feels did not meet his standards.

“The only film I regret doing is Enai Noki Paayum Thota (2019), and I’ve been joking about it,” he said. “I’m not avoiding accountability, but it’s my way of not owning the film. Beyond that, I have no regrets or need for validation.”
