Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has opened up about a much-anticipated project that never came to fruition, a film starring both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
In a recent interview, the acclaimed filmmaker shared that plans were in place before the release of his blockbuster Vikram, but the project was derailed due to unforeseen circumstances.
“I tried very hard to bring Rajini sir and Kamal sir together for a film, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it didn’t happen,” Lokesh revealed. “We had even reached the stage of signing the agreement. After I narrated the story, both legends spoke to each other over the phone right in front of me.”
According to Lokesh, the plan was for Kamal Haasan to produce the film, with him directing and Rajinikanth playing the lead.
“Both had expressed interest in working together before, and I still have the story ready, it's about two ageing gangsters,” he said. He added that the market dynamics were very different at the time.
“Films like Jailer and Vikram had not yet released. If the project were to happen now, the commercial expectations would be enormous. Considering those factors, it would be a very challenging film to make today.”
Despite the setback, Lokesh’s comments have reignited hopes among fans for a possible collaboration between the two cinema legends in the future.
