Many Instagram users recently woke up to a surprising drop in their follower counts, with some losing only a few followers while others reportedly saw thousands disappear overnight.

Confused by the sudden decline, many users took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to find out whether Instagram was facing a technical glitch or if something bigger was happening behind the scenes.

Very quickly, users realised they were not alone.

Social media timelines were flooded with similar complaints and reactions, with many expressing shock over the sudden follower dip.

“I lost 300 followers right after reaching 11K,” one user shared online.

Another user wrote, “My account is private and I barely accept people unless I know them personally, so I was confused when I suddenly lost 21 followers.”

As speculation continued to spread online, Meta eventually addressed the issue and clarified that the follower drop was not caused by a glitch.

According to the company, the decrease was part of Instagram’s routine process of removing inactive accounts from the platform.

“As part of our routine process to remove inactive accounts, some Instagram accounts may have noticed updates to their follower counts. Active followers remain unaffected, and any restored suspended account will be included in the count again after verification,” Meta explained in a statement.

The company also apologised for the confusion and thanked users for their patience.

The incident has since gone viral online, with many users continuing to compare how many followers they lost during the unexpected Instagram “purge.”
