Director Karthik Subbaraj has made a candid statement in response to the varied online reception of his latest film Retro, starring Suriya. In a recent interview, he shared his decision to step back from engaging with online reviews.

"I’ve decided not to read online reviews anymore. I don’t see authenticity in most of them, so I’ve simply stopped looking," he said. Retro, which premiered in theatres on May 1, has been widely appreciated by general audiences and several media outlets for its engaging blend of romance, comedy, and action, hallmarks of a mass commercial entertainer. The film has enjoyed commercial success, with many theatre-goers praising its energy and entertainment value.

However, a segment of online critics offered negative reviews, prompting Subbaraj to reflect on how such criticism contrasts with the reactions he witnesses in cinemas. "What I’ve learned from Retro is to stop reading online reviews. When you’re at the theatre, you can feel the audience’s joy. But some people post harsh reviews online just to ruin that happiness. So, I’ve made up my mind not to look at them anymore," he added.

Despite the occasional critical voice, Retro continues to draw audiences, proving that a film’s impact is often best measured by the connection it makes in theatres rather than the commentary it sparks online.
