Murugan

Located near to a flowing river in Kerling there’s a Murugan temple that has captivated devotees for generations with its remarkable stories of healing and divine intervention.

Long before the temple became a place of worship, local belief holds that a wandering sadhu once chose the peaceful riverbank as his meditation spot. Day after day, he sat immersed in prayer, seeking spiritual blessings for the land and its people.

One day, his meditation was interrupted by the heartbreaking cries of a childless couple. Overcome with sorrow, they shared their pain with the monk, explaining that despite years of hope and prayers, they had never been blessed with children.

Moved by their suffering, the sadhu offered words of comfort and guidance. Then, in what devotees believe was a divinely guided moment, he walked into the river until the water reached his waist. To the astonishment of those watching, he emerged holding a radiant stone formation resembling Bala Murugan, the child form of Lord Murugan.

That sacred discovery is believed to have marked the beginning of the temple's spiritual journey.

Over the years, the temple has become known for countless stories shared by devotees who believe they experienced blessings after praying here. Many come seeking relief from personal hardships, health challenges and family difficulties, placing their faith in Lord Murugan's grace.

One of the most frequently spoken-about stories involves the temple priest himself. According to devotees, he once suffered from a severe illness and was reportedly told by doctors to prepare for the worst. Refusing to lose hope, he spent days meditating before Lord Murugan inside the sanctum. To the amazement of many, his condition gradually improved, and he eventually recovered.

Another story that continues to be remembered by devotees involves a seven-year-old boy who was unable to speak. His worried parents brought him to the temple seeking divine intervention. Temple devotees believe that after special prayers were performed before Lord Murugan, the child unexpectedly began speaking, an event many still regard as a miracle.

The temple is also associated with several mystical experiences. During a grand yagna conducted on the temple grounds, devotees claim to have witnessed a fiery image resembling Bala Murugan appearing during the final offering ceremony. Others speak of sightings of a majestic peacock, Lord Murugan's sacred mount, appearing unexpectedly during Thaipusam celebrations.

Adding to the temple's spiritual significance are its surrounding natural features. The river beside the temple is regarded as sacred by devotees, who perform special prayers there for relief from Naga Dosham and ancestral afflictions. Nearby lies a lotus pond that local devotees consider especially auspicious, with many believing it possesses a serene spiritual energy.
