As the football world turns its attention to the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, millions of fans are counting down to see who will lift the coveted trophy. But away from the roaring stadiums and star-studded line-ups, another story has quietly captured hearts across the globe.
It isn't about a footballer, a coach or even a famous commentator but about a woman from a small jersey shop in Puducherry who accidentally became one of football's most loved internet personalities.
For thousands of football fans today, Lamine Yamal is no longer just Spain's teenage sensation. Thanks to Selvi, he has another unforgettable name - "Lakshmi Ammal."
- David Beckham became "Beecom."
- Lionel Messi transformed into "Urgent Lessi."
- Cristiano Ronaldo became "Naroda."
- Neymar? "Nee Yaar."
- Kylian Mbappe? Simply "Paapa."
What started as innocent attempts to pronounce the names of international football stars quickly turned into viral gold. Her charming Tamil versions of famous footballers have spread across Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and countless WhatsApp groups, making even people who have never watched a football match stop scrolling and smile.
Selvi never planned to become an internet sensation, and she runs jersey shop and wanted to promote her products online. Local children in her neighbourhood encouraged her to make Instagram reels, hoping social media could help attract customers. She agreed, never imagining that millions of people around the world would soon know her voice.
Her videos are refreshingly genuine. There are no expensive cameras, no elaborate scripts and no attempts to impress anyone. Just Selvi holding football jerseys, trying her best to pronounce unfamiliar names with complete honesty and infectious enthusiasm.

Perhaps that's exactly why people fell in love with her. In a world filled with carefully curated content, Selvi's authenticity stood out. Her videos soon reached some unexpected audiences.
Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about her on his YouTube channel, introducing her to an even wider audience. Italian football giants Juventus also joined the fun by sharing one of her videos featuring former midfielder Paul Pogba reacting to her hilarious pronunciations.
For Selvi, however, the attention still feels unbelievable. "It's all thanks to Lakshmi Ammal and Beecom," she laughs. Despite becoming an online celebrity, life at her shop hasn't changed much.
Customers now travel from different cities just to meet her. Some spend time chatting with her even if they don't end up buying anything. One visitor stayed for almost half an hour despite not finding the jersey they were looking for. Moments like these mean more to Selvi than going viral. What has remained unchanged is her commitment to keeping football jerseys affordable.
"We started this business for people who cannot afford expensive clothes," she says. "Our jerseys will continue to cost around Rs350 because many college students buy them as gifts."
Selvi comes from Thavalakuppam village in Puducherry. Before opening her own shop, she worked at a railway station stall and later at a silk sari shop, earning a modest income.
About two-and-a-half years ago, health complications forced her to leave her job. Determined to support her family, she began selling cotton dresses from home alongside her son Sivabalan. Jerseys were initially only a small part of the business, but growing demand gradually changed their focus.
Today, her son serves as a Puducherry Commando, while Selvi single-handedly manages the shop. When neighbouring businesses struggled, a friend suggested using Instagram.
That simple advice changed everything. Ironically, Selvi's success wasn't built on marketing strategies or advertising campaigns. It came from something much simpler being herself.
As football fans eagerly debate whether Spain or Argentina will lift the World Cup trophy, Selvi has already scored a victory of her own.
She reminded millions that sometimes the most memorable moments in football don't happen inside a stadium. Sometimes, they happen inside a small jersey shop, where one woman unknowingly turned "Lamine Yamal" into "Lakshmi Ammal" and, in doing so, brought smiles to football fans across the world.
