Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has finally cleared the air about one of the biggest fan questions : could Kamal Haasan have played the lead in Coolie, and could Rajinikanth have done Vikram?

In a recent interview with Bharadwaj Rangan, Lokesh explained that Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, is not part of the LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe). He said it's a completely standalone film and isn’t connected to Vikram or any of his previous universe films.

When asked about the casting, Lokesh made it clear: he never planned for Kamal Haasan to be part of Coolie. In fact, he strongly feels that these roles were written specifically for Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and swapping them wouldn’t feel right.

He said, “Rajini sir can’t do Vikram and Kamal sir shouldn’t do Coolie. These characters were written with them in mind, and no one else would do justice to those roles.”

Lokesh even joked that if he ever wanted to bring the two legends together for a film, he’d be willing to “beg on his knees” to make it happen – showing how much he respects both stars.

Interestingly, Rajinikanth didn’t even wait for the full script before saying yes to Coolie. Lokesh shared that the superstar agreed to do the film after hearing just the first half of the story. He recalled, “I paused at the interval block and asked if he was interested. He immediately said yes. I hadn’t even written the second half yet!”

When he returned with the full script months later, Rajinikanth loved it even more.

Now with all eyes on Coolie, fans can expect a fresh, action-packed film that’s tailor-made for Thalaivar and not part of any cinematic universe. Just pure Rajinikanth magic.
