Spiritual significance of Maasi Pournami

Each full moon is associated with a particular star. The Pournami that falls under the Magham star in the month of Maasi carries great spiritual importance.

Magham is associated with Ketu. When the Moon is positioned in Magham star in Simha (Leo) and the Sun is in Kumbha (Aquarius), Maasi Pournami occurs. As the full moon thithi touches both Monday and Tuesday, it is considered an especially powerful time to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti.

On Maasi Pournami, it is considered highly auspicious to:

  • Worship Lord Shiva
  • Offer prayers to Lord Ganesha, the deity associated with Ketu
  • Light a ghee lamp for Goddess Ambal to bring family prosperity
  • Worship Lord Vishnu, as it is believed that He manifested on this sacred day

  • In the evening, devotees may visit a Shiva temple and perform milk abhishekam.
  • Offer flowers and chant “Om Namah Shivaya” with devotion.
  • Worship Lord Ganesha by offering arugampul (Bermuda grass) garland.
  • At home, light lamps before the images of Shiva and Parvati and pray sincerely.
  • Offer sweet prasadam to Goddess Ambal and seek her blessings.
  • Visit a Perumal temple, light a ghee lamp and perform archanai with Tulasi leaves.
