Mahashivratri, derived from Maha (greatness), Shiv (Lord Shiva), and Ratri (night), translates to "Lord Shiva's Great Night." This auspicious festival involves staying awake throughout the night, engaging in the recitation of powerful Vedic mantras believed to charge the body with beneficial infrared energies, acting as a remedy for seasonal changes.

Proper observance of Mahashivratri fasting includes the following guidelines:

Do’s:

1. Rise early during sunrise or Brahma Muhurta.

2. Wear clean attire.

3. Recite 'OM Namah Shivaya' multiple times.

4. Offer specific items like milk, dhatura flowers, sandalwood paste, yoghurt, belpatra, ghee, honey, and sugar to Lord Shiva.

5. Avoid wearing black; prefer colors like red, pink, or yellow.

6. Consume easily digestible foods such as fruits, Kheer, or Halwa.

7. Exercise restraint in words and actions, refraining from hurting elders.

Don’ts:

1. Avoid offering Kumkumam to the Shiva Lingam.

2. Refrain from offering coconut water to the Shiva Lingam.

3. According to Hindu scriptures, do not offer Tulsi (holy basil) to Shiva; it is traditionally reserved for Vishnu.

4. Steer clear of tobacco or alcohol.

5. Avoid food items made from rice and wheat.

6. Skip garlic, onion, and non-vegetarian meals due to their tamasic nature.

7. Perform only a half-parikrama around the Shiva Linga, following the Shiva Purana's guidance.

Observing these rituals ensures a spiritually enriching Mahashivratri, fostering a connection with the divine during this sacred night.
