What does an ideal post-retirement life look like?
For most, the idea conjures up visions of peaceful mornings, afternoon naps, and evenings spent sipping tea with loved ones. But then, there are those rare souls who refuse to be boxed in by expectations, those who choose a life less ordinary.
Meet Mohan uncle and Leela aunty, a couple in their 80s who are defying stereotypes, one kilometer at a time. Instead of slowing down, they revved up a vintage 1974 Royal Enfield, strapped on a sidecar, and hit the road for a PAN-India journey covering 2,000 km across 28 Indian states. Together.
In a heartfelt chat with them, one thing was clear, this isn't just a road trip. It's a love story on wheels.
"I'm a gallivant at heart, I can't sit still," chuckles Mohan uncle. What started as solo trips years ago soon turned into a shared dream when he decided to include his beloved wife Leela in his travel plans. “I added a sidecar so she could travel comfortably,” he smiles, revealing the kind of thoughtful companionship that makes this journey even more special.
Their voyage wasn’t just driven by wanderlust. It was fuelled by unshakable mutual respect, trust, and shared purpose. When Leela aunty fractured her leg mid-trip in Chitrakoot, many advised them to return home. But not her.
"She’s the tougher one between us," says uncle, full of pride. She insisted we continue and we did.
Together, they crossed states, braved roads and weather, met strangers-turned-friends, and spread messages on climate change and social stigma in rural communities. Each mile echoed their values, each pit stop added a chapter to their shared legacy.
"We’re always welcomed with smiles and warm hearts wherever we go," Leela aunty says. “It’s the people who make the journey beautiful.”
And what keeps them going, physically and mentally, at this age? Their secret is beautifully simple, a balanced diet, a strong mind, and a positive heart. No smoking, no alcohol. Just khichdi, buttermilk, and love : lots of it.
This couple shows us that adventure knows no age, and love, when rooted in respect and shared dreams only grows stronger with time.
At a time when comfort might seem like the obvious choice, Mohan & Leela chose commitment to life, to passion, and most importantly, to each other.
They don’t just give us travel goals. They give us relationship goals. Life goals. Purpose goals. Because sometimes, the most beautiful journeys begin after 80.
