Legendary music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, recently announced their decision to part ways after over two decades of marriage. The news, confirmed through an official statement by Saira Banu’s lawyer on November 19, 2024, has garnered significant public attention.

The statement described the decision as mutual, explaining that “after many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman.” It further elaborated that despite their deep love for one another, ongoing emotional strain and tensions in the relationship have led to an “insurmountable gap” between them, which neither party feels they can bridge. The couple requested privacy and understanding during this challenging time.

Amid the announcement, rumours began to circulate online, stating that AR Rahman might step away from his career. A now-deleted tweet by cinephile Amutha Bharathi speculated that the maestro would be taking a break following the divorce.

However, Rahman’s daughter, Khatija Rahman, quickly shut down these claims. In a firm response on X (formerly Twitter), she stated, “Pls stop spreading such useless rumours,” putting an end to the speculations.

The news of their separation marks the end of a long-standing relationship that had been admired by many, while Rahman’s family continues to address rumours and misinformation surrounding the development.
