Nurse’s Chilling Morgue Encounter: “I Knew Those Pale, Bluish Feet”

Working at a morgue is not a job everyone can imagine doing. Beyond the emotional demands of handling the deceased, staff may also have to work through the night, often in quiet surroundings that can make even the smallest sound feel unsettling.

For Siti Fazilah, who has spent 10 years working as a morgue attendant, fear and nervousness have become part of the job. But one incident she shared about a late-night shift left her questioning what she had seen.

According to Fazilah, the incident began at around 1am when a nurse from the third floor called to ask her to switch on the morgue refrigerator. A body was expected to be brought down for storage, so she began preparing the necessary arrangements.

While waiting, Fazilah sat in the room, going through documents and files on a table. Every now and then, she checked the refrigerator to see whether it had reached the required temperature.

Then, the morgue door opened. To her surprise, she saw Sarah, a nurse who worked on the fourth floor, enter the room and sit on a chair nearby. Sarah appeared exhausted, and Fazilah assumed she had been asked to come down because of a staff shortage.

Not wanting to disturb her colleague, Fazilah continued with her paperwork. As the hours passed, the expected body had still not arrived. By around 2am, Fazilah noticed that Sarah appeared to have fallen asleep in the chair.

She continued sorting through the documents until a sheet of paper suddenly fell to the floor near Sarah’s feet. Fazilah bent down to pick it up. But as she looked towards the chair, she noticed something that immediately filled her with dread. Sarah’s feet looked pale and bluish.

Fazilah said she was familiar with the appearance of such feet from her work at the morgue. In that moment, she became convinced that the figure sitting beside her was not really her colleague, but something that merely resembled Sarah.

Despite her fear, she chose not to react or make a scene. Instead, she continued working as though nothing had happened.

Shortly afterwards, the nurse from the third floor called again with an update: the body would not be sent to the morgue after all because a family member had come forward to claim it. According to Fazilah’s account, the figure resembling Sarah disappeared after the call ended.

What had seemed like an ordinary night shift had turned into an experience she would remember for years. Fazilah said people are often surprised when they learn about her work and sometimes ask whether she is afraid or has encountered anything frightening while on duty.

Her answer is honest: she still feels scared and nervous, especially when an unclaimed body is brought in for storage. She also shared that some long-serving workers have experienced incidents they consider even more frightening.

For those working in a morgue, the job comes with responsibilities that extend beyond what most people see. And while stories like Fazilah’s may send chills down the spine, they remain personal accounts of experiences that cannot be independently verified.

After many years on the job, Fazilah continues to do her work, even knowing that some night shifts can leave her with stories that are difficult to forget.
