Purattasi Sani Viratham: Why Devotees Worship Lord Venkateswara To Overcome Obstacles?

Purattasi is considered an especially significant month for devotees of Lord Vishnu, and Saturdays during this month hold a special place in many households.

With the first Purattasi Saturday approaching, devotees traditionally observe viratham, prepare offerings and worship Lord Venkateswara, believing that the prayers can help remove obstacles and bring positive changes to their lives.

But have you ever wondered why Saturdays in Purattasi are considered so special?

Why is Purattasi Sani considered important?

According to traditional spiritual beliefs, worshipping Lord Venkateswara on Purattasi Saturdays is associated with seeking relief from the difficulties attributed to Lord Shani.

Lord Shani is traditionally regarded as the deity associated with karma and its consequences, while Lord Venkateswara is believed to have a special connection with Shani. Because of this belief, devotees observe Purattasi Sani Viratham and offer prayers to Lord Venkateswara, seeking blessings, peace and the removal of obstacles in their lives.

The story behind Lord Venkateswara and Lord Shani

There is also a traditional story explaining the connection between the two. According to the story, when Lord Shani first appeared during the Kali Yuga, Sage Narada told him that he could use his powers to trouble people anywhere on Earth but advised him not to go near Tirumala.

Curious and confident in his own power, Shani decided to test this and placed his foot on the sacred hills of Tirumala. However, the moment he did so, he was thrown away.

Realising that Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, resided there, Shani understood the divine power before him. He approached Lord Venkateswara, bowed before him and sought forgiveness.

Lord Venkateswara then granted Shani forgiveness but placed one condition before him. Shani should not trouble those devotees who sincerely remember and worship Lord Venkateswara. Shani accepted the condition and promised that he would not cause suffering to the Lord's true devotees. This story is one of the reasons devotees traditionally associate Purattasi Saturdays with prayers to Lord Venkateswara and seeks his protection from difficulties.

What about Maavilakku?

During Purattasi, devotees also follow different traditional forms of worship, including preparing offerings and lighting Maavilakku as part of their prayers.

For many families, these practices are not only rituals but a way of expressing faith, gratitude and devotion. Devotees believe that observing Purattasi Sani Viratham and worshipping Lord Venkateswara with sincerity can bring peace of mind, help overcome obstacles and invite divine blessings.
