The Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf) has appointed former national karate exponent R. Sharmendran as the head of the national development squad.

With an illustrious career marked by four SEA Games gold medals, Sharmendran, 32, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. The two-year contract aims to harness Sharmendran's expertise in assembling a young and formidable squad for the upcoming 2027 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Despite facing retirement due to multiple surgeries, Sharmendran is determined to rejuvenate the national squad by working closely with former national captain Hatta Mahamut. His strategic approach involves fostering a dynamic and friendly training system to engage the younger generation.

With that being said, the focus is on preparing the team for the Southeast Asian Karate Championship in Bangkok, Thailand. Sharmendran expressed gratitude for the opportunity and emphasized his commitment to giving back to the sport by sharing his knowledge and mentoring the next generation of karate athletes. The appointment comes at a crucial time as Malaysia aims to maintain its prominence in karate at both regional and international levels.

Best wishes on embarking the new journey, Sharmendran!
