Nothing disrupts a smooth drive like an unexpected pothole. That sudden jolt can be frustrating and, in some cases, lead to costly vehicle repairs. Fortunately, there is a way to report potholes and other road hazards to the authorities and have them addressed promptly.

Additionally, if your vehicle sustains damage due to a pothole, you may be eligible for compensation.

How to Report Potholes and Road Issues

The Works Ministry (KKR) has streamlined the process for the public to report potholes, damaged roads, faulty traffic lights, broken street lamps, and even landslides. You can submit a complaint through:

- The MyJalan KKR mobile app (available on the App Store and Google Play Store)
- The Works Ministry’s website
- Emailing the ministry at [email protected]

Using the MyJalan KKR app, you can:

1. Pinpoint the location of the issue
2. Select the type of road problem
3. Provide a brief description
4. Upload a photo (optional but helpful)
5. Submit your complaint

Once submitted, you will receive a notification via the app and email, allowing you to track the status of your complaint.

According to the Works Ministry:

- Potholes on federal roads will be temporarily covered within 24 hours of receiving a complete complaint.
- For non-federal roads, the complaint will be forwarded to the relevant authority, such as local councils or highway concessionaires.

This initiative is part of the MYJalan campaign, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to encourage public participation in ensuring safer roads.

Claiming Compensation for Pothole Damage

If your vehicle sustains damage due to a pothole, you are legally entitled to seek compensation from the responsible authority.

Steps to File a Claim:

1. Gather Evidence – Take clear photos of the pothole, your damaged vehicle, and the location.
2. Keep Receipts – Retain repair bills and any related expenses.
3. Contact the Relevant Authority :
- For city roads, report to the local council.
- For highways, reach out to the expressway operator.
- For federal or state roads, contact the relevant government agency.
4. Submit Your Claim – Include all necessary documents and, if required, a police report.

Authorities will assess your claim and, if approved, offer compensation. By reporting road hazards and seeking rightful compensation, Malaysians can contribute to safer roads and ensure accountability from relevant authorities.
